Dock Street Uke Camp Annouces Scholarship Winner

The Dock Street Uke Camp is pleased to announce the winner of the Ross-Beach Scholarship for the 2014 ukulele camp is East Chezzetcook's Sandra Crawford-Freeman. Sandra is a member of the Halifax Uke Gang (H.U.G.) and has a cottage in Shelburne County. “She attended the first Uke Camp in 2012 and we're excited to have her back” says Nicole Colbeck, co-founder of the uke camp.

The scholarship began in 2012 at the first ukulele camp when Ross Beach, a registered participant, couldn't attend at the last moment. Rather than ask for a refund he asked that his ticket price be given to someone who wanted to attend the camp but couldn't otherwise afford it. “We loved this idea so we decided to implement the scholarship at all future camps” says Hal Brolund, local resident and co-founder of the uke camp. “Rather than make it about money though, we look for someone who is passionate about the ukulele and who would make a great addition to our participants. Sandra Crawford-Freeman will be a great addition to our participants as we learn this year.”

The Dock Street Uke Camp, held in Shelburne Nova Scotia on September 19-21 is dedicated to providing quality ukulele instruction on the beautiful harbour front of Shelburne. This year the camp features Cape Cod musician Tim Sweeney talking about the Zen of Ukulele and Low Down of the Low G, a discussion about tunings. We also welcome local ukulele legends Manitoba Hal, Nigel D'Eon and Hank Mumps from Halifax for a complete day of workshops and strum-a-long sessions.

The camp begins Friday September 19th with a cruise on the Brown Eyed Girl with Shelburne Harbour Cruises and then moves over to the Seadog Saloon for a ukulele hootenany open mic. All musicians are welcome at the Seadog and you don't have to play ukulele but don't be surprised to hear a bunch of them playing. The big event of the camp is a gala concert featuring all four musicians in individual performance at the Osprey Arts Centre on Saturday night. The concert is open to the public and tickets can be obtained through the Osprey box office.
